Character Building

Character isn’t taught in a lecture. It’s grown — named, noticed, and practiced in a hundred small family moments.

Grow the Fruit, Not Just the Rules

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.”Galatians 5:22–23 (KJV)

Rules tell a child where the fence is. Fruit is what grows inside the fence. Both matter — but a family that only polices behavior raises rule-keepers, while a family that names and celebrates growing fruit raises children who want to be like Jesus.

A Trait a Month

Pick one trait per month. Say it at breakfast, watch for it all day, celebrate it at dinner. Nine traits conveniently cover a school year:

MonthTraitFamily Practice
1LoveEach person does one unasked act of service for someone in the house — secretly, if they can manage it.
2JoyNightly “best thing today” at dinner. Joy is noticing what God already gave.
3PeacePractice the do-over: when tempers flare, anyone may call “do-over” and both sides retry the conversation kindly.
4PatiencePick the long line at the store on purpose — and talk about it after.
5KindnessOne encouraging note per week to a teacher, teammate, or sibling.
6GoodnessDo the right thing when nobody’s watching, then talk about how it felt at dinner. (Returning the cart counts.)
7FaithfulnessEveryone picks one chore to do every day without reminders for a month.
8GentlenessVolume challenge: disagreements this month get made quietly. Whispered arguments turn silly fast — that’s the point.
9Self-ControlScreens down at meals for everyone — parents included. Self-control is caught before it’s taught.

Catch Them Being Good

Correction tells a child what to stop; encouragement tells them who they’re becoming. Aim for five specific encouragements for every correction:

“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”Matthew 5:16 (KJV)
